The response to the first and the secondeditionsof my book'Biochemistry' (reprintedseveral timesin just 6 years)from the studentsand teachers is simplyoverwhelming. I wasfloodedwith highlyappreciative lettersfrom all cornersof Indiaandabroad!Thisgivesme immensesatisfaction andencouragemLnt in this academic venture.
I have corresponded with manybiochernistry teachers, invitingtheir commentsandopinionsfor further improvingthe book.Mostof them havebeenkind enoughto offerconstructive suggestions. I alsovisited several colleges andhadpersonal interactionwith facultymembers andstudents. Theseexercises, spread over the past 6 years,have helpedme to get direct feedbackon my book, besidesrealisingthe additional requirements of students.
I have grea tpleasurein presentingthe third editionof my bookwith severalunique/novelfeatures,some high-lightsof which are listedbelow.
. A thoroughrevisionandupdatingof eachchapterwith latestadvances-
. Multicolouredillustrationsfor a betterunderstanding of chemicalstructuresandbiochemical reactions.
. Increase in the font sizeof the text for more pleasant and comfortable reading.
. Incorporation of a new Sectionon MolecularBiologyand Biotechnology.
. Additionof ten new chapters-humangenomeproject,genetherapy,bioinformatics, free radicalsand antioxidants, tissueproteinsandbodyfluids,environmental biochemistry, genetics, immunologyetc.
. An improvedorientationand treatmentof humanbiochemistry in healthand disease.
. Additionof practicalbiochemistry andclinicalbiochemistry laboratoryin the appendix.
It is true that I represent a selected groupof individuals authoringbooks,havingsometime at disposal, besides hardwork, determination anddedication. I considermyselfan eternallearneranda regularstudent of biochemistry.
However, it is beyond my capability to keeptrackof theevergrowing advances in biochemistry due to the exponentialSrowthof the subject.And this makesme nervous,wheneverI think of revisingthe book.I honestlyadmit that I haveto dependon maturereaders for subsequent editionsof this book.
