It has a lifetime prevalence as high as 15%, is associated with substantial morbidity and mortality, and imposes a substantial burden in developing and developed countries. According to recent data, unipolar major depression is the fifth leading cause of worldwide disability, accounting for around 4% of the world’s total burden of disease.
